Man arrested in Garner Avenue deadly shooting from mid-June pleads not guilty

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) Update June 30, 2023, at 10:50 a.m.- A man allegedly responsible for a fatal shooting on the 700 block of Garner Avenue from mind-June was arraigned in court Friday.

Miguel Angel Alvarenga, 30, was charged by the Monterey County District Attorney's Office with second-degree murder, assault with a semi-automatic rifle on a person and causing great bodily injury with a special enhancement for using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Alvarenga pled not guilty to all charges through the use of an interpreter. He remains in custody on a $2,005,000 bail.

He is next scheduled for court on July 26, 2023.

Update June 30, 2023, at 10:50 a.m.- Salinas Police said that an arrest has been made in a deadly shooting that occurred on June 15 in the morning.

Miguel Angel Alvarenga, 30, was identified as the suspect by police. He was arrested on Thursday by Salinas Police Detectives and Officers of the Violence Suppression Task Force in the area of John Street and Work Street during a traffic stop without incident.

Police believe there are no further suspects at this time, but this is still an active investigation.

Alvarenga was charged with murder, attempted murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm. His bail was set at $2,005,000, per the Monterey County Jail.

Salinas Police said one person is dead after a shooting on Garner Avenue.

Police arrived at 1:20 a.m. Thursday morning for a ShotSpotter activation on the 700 block of Garner Avenue.

Police were told that a victim shot was in the area. A 36-year-old was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Life-saving measures were attempted but were unsuccessful.

He died of his injuries, per police. The victim was identified as Luis Florez Gonzalez, by Salinas Police on Friday.

No suspect information is available at this time.
