Magnitude 6.8 quake in Tajikistan; no injuries, damage
BEIJING (AP) — A magnitude 6.8 earthquake has shaken a lightly populated, remote part of Tajikistan near China’s far western Xinjiang region. No injuries or damage have been reported. Thursday’s quake struck 41 miles west of Murghob, Tajikistan, and 12 miles deep, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Mughrob is a district capital with a few thousand people located high in the Pamir Mountains. China’s state broadcaster reported the quake was strongly felt in parts of Xinjiang but no damage or injuries have been reported. Several aftershocks followed later on Thursday, Tajikistan’s authorities and state news agency said, without referencing any damage.
