Salinas Fire releases “Community Risk Assessment” study to help prevent fires

The Salinas Fire Department is increasing efforts to keep the community safe from fires.

The department just released a “Community Risk Assesment” study which looks at how they can help residents.

They say limiting “Traffic calming” measures will help with response times. The report says the fire department should plan for an additional station as Boronda’s “Future growth” plan develops.

It finds total response workload has increased by nearly 30% over the last 14 years.

An increase in fire inspections across the city is also recommended.

“We currently have a program doing business inspections and we’re going to grow that program,” said Chief Pablo Barreto, “We’ll be working with businesses to keep them working and open but also safe for everyone there.”

The fire department cites budget contraints as to why they aren’t able to provide what they feel is the best service for residents.

Those budget contraints have led to staffing issues in the fire prevention district.
