Farmworker Housing Act passed by state legislature

Assemblymember Robert Rivas (D-Hollister) announced on Wednesday that the Farmworker Housing Act, which he said will provide quality housing for farmworkers, was passed by the California Legislature.

The Farmworker Housing Act, AB 1783, will now be considered by Governor Newsom. Rivas said the bill cuts through red tape to build housing on agricultural land and focuses on state financial support for farmworker housing that is permanent and family-oriented instead of a temporary guest worker program.

“This bill will provide the opportunity for children of farmworkers throughout the state to climb out of homelessness and move toward the California dream,” Rivas said.

Rivas said the bill is supported by local governments that include San Benito and Santa Cruz counties, Hollister, Morgan Hill, Salinas, San Juan Bautista and Morgan Hill.
