Postmaster investigating USPS mailbox tampering in Scotts Valley

The United States Postal Service is looking into who put a sticky substance inside a Scotts Valley mailbox.

A resident reported they put their mail inside one of the boxes outside of the 241 Kings Village Road post office location, but didn’t hear the mail drop all the way down.

When they reached in to see if it was stuck, they found their mail covered in a sticky glue-like substance. The substance prevented the mail from dropping all the way into the box, leaving it closer to the opening for someone to steal.

An investigator with USPS tells KION they are still looking into what the substance is and who put it there.

They say this is a federal crime and could land someone in federal prison for up to five years.

Information leading to an arrest and conviction could be rewarded up to $10,000.

The mailbox that was tampered with is temporarily out of order.
