Cal Fire releases cause of Deer Fire in Boulder Creek
UPDATE 9/6/2019 9:00 a.m. Cal Fire announced on Thursday that the Deer Fire near Boulder Creek was started by embers escaping an illegal garbage burn.
The agency said the embers were from a burn barrel and landed in receptive fuel bed. It said the fire started on privately-owned land off Deer Creek Road.
The Deer Fire started on Sept. 3 and burned more than 10 acres. One firefighter was injured, an outbuilding was destroyed and several homes were threatened.
Cal Fire issued a reminder that backyard burning, burning garbage and burn barrels are prohibited.
UPDATE 9/4/2019 10:00 a.m. The Deer Fire burning off Deer Creek Road and Rond Road near Boulder Creek is 10 acres and 60% contained.
Cal Fire said forward spread has stopped and Deer Creek Road is still closed.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
PREVIOUS STORY: Cal Fire’s San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit said that crews are at the scene of a vegetation fire near Deer Creek Road in Boulder Creek.
Firefighters from Cal Fire and the Boulder Creek Fire Department are working to contain it. Crews on the ground making access to the fire and aircraft are making drops.
It is currently 10 to 12 acres. There is a hard road closure at Bear Creek Road and Deer Creek Road.
