Santa Cruz Police: Two arrested after domestic disturbance leads to intentionally set fire
UPDATE 9/4/2019 5:25 p.m. Two Santa Cruz residents were arrested after a suspected domestic disturbance that police said involved an intentionally set fire.
Santa Cruz police and the Santa Cruz Fire Department responded to the incident on the 300 block of Jessie Street Wednesday morning after the disturbance and fire were reported.
“They arrived and found a well involved fire on the first floor of a two-story multi residential complex with a female still inside that apartment that was on fire,” said Santa Cruz Fire Chief Jason Hajduk.
That female has been identified as Brenda Scott, who investigators now believe started the fire. She was injured during the incident and was taken to an out-of-county trauma center. She is still in custody.
Officers helped with evacuation efforts, and during that time, they said Grant Washburn delayed and resisted officers and fire crews. He was arrested on obstruction charges.
During the incident a Santa Cruz Police officer was also transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation. He has since been treated and released.
Neighbors say they are thankful this did not turn into something worse.
“I heard the sirens and figured that’s really close and I came out and everybody was out, and I saw the smoke and I didn’t have time to grab anything,” said Katherine Burke who has lived in the complex for 25 years.
“Just knowing that were entering into fire season so not really sure if it’s something that’s small or going to get bigger,” said another neighbor, Kortney Good.
Witnesses are asked to call Santa Cruz police at 831-471-1131 or 831-420-5820.
