Monterey PD cracking down on speeders this weekend

Monterey Police are laying down the hammer this weekend as Car Week on the peninsula reaches a climax.

Extra patrol officers are out enforcing traffic laws and catching fast cars going too fast through the streets.

One location police have been focusing on is on Foam Street right after drivers get out of the Lighthouse tunnel going toward Cannery Row.

“We’ve made quite a few tickets that we’ve issued for people that were speeding. We’ve caught a few people racing through the tunnel,” said Lt. Michael Bruno, of the Monterey Police Department.

Problem areas include streets like Del Monte, Lighthouse and Fremont.

“I saw a person at the end and it just seemed a little sketchy. And I was already going too fast, over the speed limit, and we went straight past him and it was a cop with a radar gun,” said one driver who got a ticket on Friday.

Police say the cars that go too fast, however, are not what you would expect.

“They’re not so much the exotic type cars so far. They’ve been mostly like sports cars like Mustangs, Camaros, those types of vehicles,” said Bruno.

Speeders could face fines, the impounding of their car and higher insurance rates. Police are also pulling people over who illegally modify their cars, like installing louder exhausts.

But the best way to avoid police this weekend is to simply follow the rules.
