Trustees with the Alisal Union School District approved two resolutions Wednesday, one condemning mass shootings and calling for sensible gun control legislation and one supporting the 2020 Census.
The resolution on mass shootings was approved unanimously by trustees. It says the board of trustees joins the rest of the country in mourning those killed and injured in the shootings in Gilroy, California, El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. Some additional resolutions include:
Calling on Congress to provide more funding to mental health and social services in schools and communities. Calling on Congress to enact gun control legislation that will restrict assault rifles with high-capacity magazines and require background checks. Rededicating the district to condemning racism and hatred. Calling on national leaders to exercise restrain in verbal and social media communications while also avoiding statements that could promote or incite racial tensions. Rededicating the district in its commitment to promote respect for diversity. Rededicating efforts to working with local agencies to provide a safe environment for students, families, the community and the city.
The district also approved a resolution supporting the 2020 Census. In the resolution, the trustees said in California, there are diverse community and demographics that are traditionally hard to count, but that it is important for them to be counted for accurate representation. The board resolved to help ensure a complete and accurate count of district residents. It also resolved to promote no-cost means of participating.
