Mill Fire in Big Sur fully contained

UPDATE 8/13/2019 9:30 a.m. The U.S. Forest Service announced that the Mill Fire in Big Sur is 100% contained.

It burned a total of 310 ares, but no structures were damaged. It was first reported on July 30.

UPDATE 8/12/2019 2:20 p.m. The Los Padres National Forest announced that the Mill Fire is 98% contained and is expected to be fully contained later Monday afternoon.

The Nacimiento Fergusson Road reopened Monday morning along with the Vicente Flat trail.

An engine crew is still at the site mopping up hot spots.

UPDATE 8/12/2019 11:20 a.m. The Nacimiento Fergusson Road has reopened following closures for the Mill Fire.

The road reopened on Monday at 9 a.m. The fire is now 95% contained at 310 acres.

UPDATE 8/6/2019 9:45 a.m. The Mill Fire is 85% contained at 310 acres. On Tuesday, there will be helicopter drops to cool hot spots.

A forest closure order is still in effect for the area. The fire was expected to be contained Monday night.

UPDATE 8/5/2019 9:00 a.m. The Mill Fire is currently 70% contained at 310 acres, according to Los Padres National Forest officials.

There are currently no evacuations or threats to communities, but the FAA has issued temporary flight restrictions over the area. A forest closure took effect on Sunday, and that was issued for Nacimiento Ferguson Road from Highway 1 to the Forest Boundary at Fort Hunter Liggett, Kirk Creek Trail from Highway 1 to Cone Peak Road, Mill Creek trail at the junction of Nacimiento Ferguson Road to South Coast Ridge Road, Cone Peak Road from the junction of Nacimiento Ferguson Road to Cone Peak and South Coast Ridge Road from the junction of Nacimiento Ferguson Road to Chalk Peak.

The Mill Fire started at around 5:30 a.m. on July 30 on Mill Creek Road. The Los Padres National Forest posted online that the fire is expected to be contained on Monday at around 11 p.m.

Two people have been injured.

UPDATE 8/2/2019 12:00 p.m. The US Forest Service said the Mill fire is 20% contained at 280 acres.

Nacimiento-Ferguson Road is still closed at Highway 1 and the Fort Hunter Liggett Boundary, and smoke may be visible from Highway 1. There are no structures threatened, but there has been one minor injury.

There are 630 firefighters at the scene, and the response includes engine crews, hand crews and air support.

The forest service said fire behavior declined after midnight, and activity on the line decreased. They expect the fire to be fully contained on Monday by around 11 p.m.

UPDATE 8/1/2019 12:45 p.m. The Mill Fire is now 15% contained at 280 acres.

Nacimiento-Fergusson Road is still closed at Highway 1 and Fort Hunter Liggett to let emergency equipment and fire engines through. Smoke may be visible from Highway 1.

The U.S. Forest Service said there is still no threat to structures, but there has been one minor injury.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

UPDATE 7/31/2019 11:50 a.m. Los Padres National Forest said the Mill Fire has now burned 280 acres. It is 10% contained.

Officials said it chewed through the retardant line overnight. The national forest will be ordering a team to help with suppression. It is currently burning in timber and tall grass in terrain that is described as steep and rugged.

There are currently no structures threatened.

UPDATE 7/30/2019 5:30 p.m. A fire broke out near Nacimiento-Fergusson Road and Highway 1 at around 5:36 a.m. on Tuesday.

The fire has burned 120 acres. There are currently no evacuations in effect and no structures are threatened, but there is no estimate of containment.

Officials with Los Padres National Forest said there are 250 firefighters at the scene. Nacimiento-Fergusson Road is closed at Highway 1 and the Fort Hunter Liggett boundary so emergency equipment and crews can safely navigate the road.

No injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

PREVIOUS STORY: Los Padres National Forest said in a social media post on Tuesday that the Nacimiento-Ferguson Road is currently closed while firefighters work to contain the Mill Fire.

The national forest is asking that people avoid the area around Kirk Creek and Highway 1 so firefighters can access the fireline.

The National Weather Service Bay Area released images showing the heat signature of the fire. It said that at 10:30 a.m. there was a spike in heat.
