Salinas man hit by car, dies on Highway 1 south of Mar Monte Avenue

UPDATE 8/7/2019 1:30 p.m. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office identifies a man hit and killed on Highway 1 Monday night as 28-year-old Ramon Velasquez-Torres of Salinas.

The CHP said that around 9:35 p.m., a Gilroy man driving a Toyota Prius was merging onto southbound Highway 1 from the Vista Area south of Mar Monte Avenue. That is when the CHP said the driver hit Velasquez-Torres, who was walking in that area.

Paramedics responded to the scene and began performing CPR on Velasquez-Torres, but he died of his injuries at the scene.

After the crash, the two right lanes of southbound Highway 1 were closed for about 2.5 hours while CHP officers gathered evidence and investigated the crash.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but the CHP said drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors.
