Neighbors show appreciation for first responders following tragedy in Gilroy
Eight-year-old Arianne Jauch showed even in tragedy there is good. Jauch baked dozens of cookies and delivered them to law enforcement at Christmas Hill Park. “We made cookies. Different shapes of cookies,” said Arianne.
Arianne’s mother, Aicha Jauch, said her daughter came to her with the idea. The family lives down the street from where shots rang out Sunday night. They said they have since seen first responders working around the clock. “Doing these little acts of kindness for first responders, the ones behind the scenes, is a big deal. They need the support just as much as everybody else.” said Aicha.
Arianne’s delivery blew first responders away. Jason Leist with the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office said he and his colleagues have been working twelve-hour shifts since Sunday. “Law enforcement has had a hard couple of years in the media. To see the citizens come out and support us the way they have, here in Gilroy, is overwhelming,” said Leist.
Leist said Arianne isn’t the only one to reach out. He said nearby residents continue to show their appreciation. “I just can’t believe how much support the citizens of Gilroy have provided their police department, and the rest of the incoming agencies, with food and anything we ask for,” said Leist.
The Jauch family said they are proud to see their neighborhood come together. Shirts with the phrase “Gilroy Strong” are being sold at shops downtown. Even kids are doing their part by selling lemonade to raise money for the victims and their families.
