CHP: Erratic driver seen on shoulder of Highway 101 arrested for DUI
UPDATE 07/10/19 5:25 p.m. California Highway Patrol said the driver seen speeding in the video on Highway 101 in the Morgan Hill-Gilroy area was arrested for DUI.
They say another driver reported the erratic truck driver. CHP was able to find the man off the Leavesley exit in Gilroy. They say he was highly intoxicated.
CHP Santa Cruz said it’s not only dangerous to drive on the shoulder, it’s also illegal and the other driver did the right thing by reporting it.
“If we’re not in the area, we might not know about it and you as a driver and witness, you’re our best bet. Call 911 and tell us a description of the driver, description of the vehicle, license plate if you can get that, the location of where you are and location they’re traveling to,” said Officer Julieta Trenado.
You are also warned to keep a safe distance from the person driving erratically by slowing down or change lanes if it’s safe. Trenado said, “we are experiencing a lot of aggressive drivers and with aggressive drivers it causes a lot of road rage. It’s a serious problem that we’re encountering. Please don’t engage in it and if you do witness it, don’t become a problem as well, just let it go.”
CHP also said the median is not made or paved for driving on. It is often made up of uneven pavement, rocks and dirt, which not only kicks up at other cars and makes it hard to see, it can cause you to easily lose control of your car and cause a major accident.
