Veterans remember fight for freedom on Fourth of July
Fourth of July celebrations are happening all over the Central Coast today, but in Seaside, veterans proved they do not need a parade or big fireworks show to celebrate the country they fought for. They told KION that it is a holiday best spent together.
“It just gives you a sense of pride,” said veteran Michael Ward. “It means a lot. It’s the best holiday in the world.”
The location has special meaning too. Seaside is the home of the former Fort Ord, and veterans who served and trained there said they stayed for a reason.
“The community is an amazing place to be, mainly because of the support that they give all veterans,” Ward said.
While the Fourth of July is a day to celebrate, veterans say they do not for get the hard times spent fighting for freedom. Seaside resident and veteran Raymond Dandridge served overseas off-and-on for over two decades, and he says the bond he shares with his veteran family in Seaside makes the holiday that much more special.
Veterans tell us they are the lucky ones, knowing that unlike so many others, they got to come home.
The American Legion will be selling fireworks all night, and nearly 100% of the proceeds will go to local veteran families in need.
