Monterey creating ordinance for pedicabs to follow in the city

There will soon be another way to get around in Monterey, pedicabs. These will likely hit the streets by the end of the month.

Right now, a state law lets them legally operate in any city, but they still need to follow city rules. Monterey wants to keep the city running smoothly but also wants to improve ways to get around.

Nearby residents to the city say they are excited. Julie has used pedicabs before in places like D.C., she says it should be a good addition to the city. “They offer them everywhere. They get you from monument to monument. So I could see it working really well to get down to Cannery Row [and] to get to Asilomar even.”

Monterey is a small enough town you can pretty much walk, bike or run anywhere. But, sometimes you need more options.

The city already banned e-bikes and e-scooters from earlier this year. Fernanda Roveri with the city says they did this because, “Monterey is such a small city, we just want it to be safe for everyone.”

You’ll likely see pedicabs in the city by the end of the month. To keep the city running smoothly, there are some rules. Some include: fee’s owners must pay, age limits for the drivers, insurance, background checks and obeying the rules of the road.

The ordinance will officially go through its second hearing on July 16th, after that, look out for another way to get around town.
