Former UC Santa Cruz student indicted on drug charges

A former UC Santa Cruz student was indicted by a federal grand jury in San Jose, charged with three counts of possession with intent to distribute controlled substances.

24-year-old Matthew Wilcox Hutchings of Soquel is accused of having LSD, MDMA and psilocybin mushrooms on or around May 7 with intent to distribute.

An affidavit filed by an agent with Homeland Security says that Hutchings sold mushrooms and MDMA to an undercover agent three times in March and April. On May 7, UC Santa Cruz police executed a search warrant at Hutchings’ home.

He was arrested on June 4 and is in federal custody. If convicted, Hutchings could face as much as 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine for each count.
