Disturbing details revealed in the murder of Monterey doctor
Disturbing new details are being revealed about the murder of a Monterey doctor.
A transcript from a suspect’s testimony to the Clark County Grand Jury gives a timeline of what she said led up to the murder of doctor Thomas Burchard.
The 71-year-old psychiatrist was killed in March and his body was left in the trunk of a car in a Nevada desert.
Diana Pena revealed the details as part of a plea deal she accepted for a lower accessory crime.
In her testimony, Pena said Thomas Burchard arrived at his Las Vegas area home where she lived with Kelsey Turner, Jon Kennison and other roommates. A day later, they were in a car when Pena said Turner found messages on Burchard’s phone between him and her mother. Turner then became upset and that led to an argument that continued inside the Vegas home. Pena described the messages as “pornographic.”
Once inside, Pena claims that Kennison, Turner’s boyfriend, was seen raising a baseball bat. Pena said she didn’t see the strike, but she saw injuries to Burchard’s head. She then saw Kennison and Burchard wrestling.
Pena said they went to the garage presumably to take Burchard to the hospital and Burchard told her he believed Turner was going to kill him. He refused to re-enter the house when Turner and Kennison wanted to clean the mess from the fight.
That’s when Pena claims Turner asked Kennison to “knock Thomas out.”
Pena said “I came downstairs and told her to stop and she ran into the garage and came out and said it was too late and I asked her what she meant and then Logan came out and he had blood all over him.”
Testimony from the coroner revealed Burchard was killed by blunt force trauma. There didn’t appear to be any gunshot wounds.
In describing Kennison, Pena said “He had a gun that was covered in blood.”
After Burchard was killed, Pena said they all traveled back and forth between a series of hotels and homes.
The day after the murder, Kennison allegedly drove off in Turner’s Mercedes, the same car Burchard’s body was found in.
Pena said she doesn’t believe she ever saw the car again.
Pena later turned herself in after realizing there was a warrant issued for her arrest.
