Appeal puts Seaside July 4th fireworks location in limbo

The location for Seaside’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration is in limbo. The City tells KION that a Monterey resident has filed an appeal with the California Coastal Commission surrounding the location in front of City Hall at Laguna Grande Park.

This would be a new location for the fireworks show, with it previously being held at the Bayonet & Black Horse Golf Course.

Councilmember Jon Wizard says that the city previously got the needed approval for the park location and traffic mitigation from the California Coastal Commission and CalTrans. Now they will see the appeal process through and either stay at Laguna Grande, or go back to the golf course, and possibly find a third option.

KION has obtained a copy of the appeal confirmation, sent Friday. It reads in part: “

“The next step is that we identify any potential substantial issues… and prepare a report to be presented at a Coastal Commission hearing in the coming months. The City has been informed that they will need to find an alternative location for fireworks this year.”

We’re told that issues surrounding the park location, from those opposed, have to do with its potential impact on nearby Monterey residents. The park is in both Monterey and Seaside, meaning that there is concern it could create traffic and clean-up issues in Monterey, along with city resources having to be dedicated to the area, even though it is a City of Seaside event.
