Board of Education votes to revoke charter for Millennium Charter High School
The Monterey County Board of Education voted to revoke the charter for Millennium Charter High School.
The vote happened Wednesday morning, and it takes effect immediately. It will officially close on June 30.
There are currently 144 students enrolled at the school. Some of them will be graduating on Thursday, but the rest will need to find another school.
The school backed a merge with Compass Charter Schools, but the board decided that would not work because of insufficient funds.
The school’s future has been in question for months. In February, the Monterey County Office of Education, the school’s chartering agency, put the school on notice, saying it had fallen out of compliance in several areas.
The office says the school operated at a deficit, did not properly account for attendance and hired teachers without credentials. The school’s governing board chari says the issued have been fixed.
In May, more than 40 people spoke in defense of the school, saying it gives a small school option for kids in the Salinas High School District.
