UPDATE: Lockdown lifted at Carmel high school, student in custody

A shooting threat at Carmel High School left parents terrified during a lockdown, Monday.

Just after 12:00 p.m. law enforcement responded to a threat from a student at the high school. The school was immediately placed on lockdown, and about an hour later, deputies took a 15-year-old freshman into custody.

During the lockdown many parents drove to the school looking for answers.

“Driving over I was shaking like a leaf, because of all the school shootings going on and this is the last week of school,” Carmel High grandma Yvonne Rianea said.

Some loved ones even got texts from students inside.

“They were all in the gym for the award ceremony, and then all of a sudden they had a lockdown that wasn’t a drill,” Carmel High graduate Bryce Hodges said.

According to sheriff’s deputies, a freshman boy said he was going to shoot his classmates. As soon as faculty got word they took action.

“When deputies arrived, they found that a faculty member had already located the student in a bathroom,” Monterey County Sheriff’s deputy Cmdr. Garrett Sanders said. “They cleared a bathroom and locked them in their until our arrival maybe a minute later.”

After a brief negotiation, deputies were able to convince the student to come out of the bathroom.

“We set up, attempted to call him, and he immediately spoke to us and came out without incident,” Sanders said.

All the while, parents were waiting outside terrified.

“My husband and I said a prayer together, and then we were hovering around the school waiting,” Carmel High mom Hilary Hanlon said.

Deputies say it ended up being an empty threat and the student did not have a gun.

As soon as the lockdown was lifted, some parents rushed onto campus to see their kids. School administrators allowed parents to take their kids home early if they wanted to.

This is the last week of school at Carmel High.
