UPDATE: Suspect to take plea deal in Monterey doctor murder case
UPDATED 6/3/2019 3:18 p.m.: Diana Pena, one of the suspects in the murder of Dr. Thomas Burchard from Monterey, is taking a plea deal.
This while former magazine model Kelsey Turner and the model’s boyfriend Jon Logan Kennison head to trial in the killing of the 71-year-old psychiatrist whose body was found in a car outside Las Vegas.
Pena’s attorney, Jess Matsuda, declined Monday to say what crime or crimes his 30-year-old client will admit in the death of Dr. Thomas Burchard.
Pena is due in court Thursday and remains in custody on murder and conspiracy charges, but her lawyer says she cooperated with police and prosecutors since surrendering for arrest April 13.
Pena wasn’t indicted by a grand jury like her former roommates, Turner and Kennison, were on murder and conspiracy charges.
Turner and Kennison are due for arraignment June 11. Their attorneys say they’ll plead not guilty.
PREVIOUS STORY: Two of the suspects in the murder of Monterey doctor Thomas Kirk Burchard have been indicted.
Kelsey Turner and Jon Logan Kennison are accused by the Clark County grand jury of conspiracy to commit murder and murder with the use of a deadly weapon on a victim 60 years of age or older.
The indictment released by the Clark County District Attorney says they hit Burchard on the head with a blunt instrument, and called the killing willful, deliberate and premeditated.
Turner was originally set to appear in court on June 3 for a preliminary hearing, but a new hearing has not been scheduled yet.
The murder happened sometime between March 3 and March 5, 2019. Turner, Kennison and Diana Pena are accused of killing Burchard in Las Vegas and leaving his body in the trunk of Turner’s car in the desert around Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Arrest warrants say Turner had an intimate relationship with Burchard.
