New mural unveiled off Highway 101 in Salinas

There is a new 600 foot mural near Highway 101 in Salinas.

It was debuted Wednesday, and it is the largest mural in Monterey County. The colorful design is meant to celebrate the history of Salinas and represent the city’s rich agricultural importance.

Despite the size, it took less than a month to paint. Security Public Storage paid for it, and calls it a gift to the community.

“One of the challenges we have is still maintaining the feel of your local storage company,” says Matt Gifford with Security Public Storage, “So this is one of the ways we try to do that.”

The mural was designed by Kathy McHale, who says she wanted to show the ways Salinas is bountiful in the design.

“I didn’t want to leave anybody out. I wanted it to be for everyone who’s here, so anyone who looked at it could see themselves init somewhere and also honor the richness of this area,” she said.

The mural can be seen from Highway 101 near the Main Street exit. It sits directly across Pepsi Park.
