Salinas baseball foundation struggles to gain financial support
A Salinas organization says they need more support to continue training and guiding the next generation of baseball players.
Next week is the 4th Legends for Youth Clinic where Salinas native and former major league baseball player Ernie Camacho brings in other big leaguers to train the city’s future stars. At the event, kids learn the ins and outs of the game from the people who play it best.
But Camacho tells KION that he’s struggled to gain financial support for his foundation, relying on the same small group of donors for a charity that this year gave out scholarships to six Salinas High School students and is hoping to expand.
“We’re not making money and it’s benefiting the kids. Every penny that is raised, whatever is used to keep the foundation going is used for kids scholarships,” Camacho said. “And if you get these kids educated, its only going to help the trouble that’s on the street. Its as win, win, win.”
The event is next Saturday at the Hartnell College baseball field.
There will also be a coaches clinic for the first time this year.
Local coaches can learn how to best train our athletes and steer them towards a future in baseball and use it to further their education.
