Cal Fire says PG&E equipment started the Camp Fire
Cal Fire has released the official cause of the Camp Fire in Butte County, and it doesn't look good for PG&E.
On Wednesday, a release from Cal Fire said, "Cal Fire has determined that the Camp Fire was caused by electrical transmission lines owned and operated by Pacific Gas and Electricity (PG&E) located in the Pulga area."
Investigators say they found a second ignition source too. That was also electrical lines owned and operated by PG&E. As the first fire grew, it consumed the second ignition.
The Camp Fire started on November 8, 2018, in the early morning hours near Pulga. There were Red Flag conditions at the time, strong wind, warm temperatures, and dry vegetation, so it grew quickly and spread to Concow, Paradise, Magalia, and the outskirts of Chico.
The wildfire burned a total of 153,336 acres, destroyed 18,804 structures, and killed 85 people. It is the deadliest and most destructive fire in California history. In 2018 alone, Cal Fire reports that more than 7,571 wildfires burned over 1.8 million acres in California.
