New vacuum could help clean plastic from beaches
A new vacuum cleaner built by a group of college students does more than just carpets- it can be used to clean beaches.
The Canadian engineering students built “Hoola One” to sift flecks of plastic in the sand.
“It’s going into a big tank of water,” says engineer Jean-Felix Tremblay, “The plastic floats and the sand is sinking, so that way we can separate the two.”
They tested it out on Hawaii’s beaches and spent two weeks there cleaning.
More than 90% of marine debris washing up in Hawaii is plastic, and scientists say that plastic kills marine life.
