Coast Big Sur reopens under new ownership

Whether you’re traveling or a Big Sur local, Coast Big Sur’s building can’t be missed. “It’s just very unusual. It looks very different,” says Lori.

Coast Big Sur is an iconic art gallery that has officially reopened. The gallery was closed for nearly a year and a half after massive landslides closed a stretch of Highway 1, back in 2017. General Manager Tyler Rue says, “The bridges went out. Basically, Big Sur was an island.” Those doors stayed closed for nearly a year and a half.

That period of time was tough on the whole community. “Big Sur in general had a big challenge. So, a lot of places kind of banded together. That’s one of the things that is really great about learning about this community,” Rue says.

You might notice the building by the signature water tanks that make up the building. But this isn’t just a gallery; it has a restaurant and cafe.

Since reopening March 6th, the company has stayed the same in a lot of ways. But now, the

business wants to embrace the community even more. Kitchen manager Tessa Fernandez says, “We really rely on sustainability. All our food is sustainably produced. We really try and use local products.”

Moving forward, the owners aren’t too worried about what winter storms will throw their way. In Big Sur, it’s all about going with the flow.
