Elderly man uses cane to fight off a would-be robber in Watsonville
Watsonville Police need the public’s help identifying a would-be robber.
Surveillance footage captured the moment an elderly man used his cane in an attempt to fight off a would-be robber in broad daylight.
Now police need help identifying the suspect who was prowling outside a restaurant on the 500 block of Auto Center Drive late last month. Since the surveillance footage was released, Watsonville PD says they’ve already gathered multiple leads.
As the 70-year-old victim was walking out of the Popeyes and making his way to his car, the suspect snuck up from behind and tried to snatch the victim’s wallet and car keys.
The elderly man attempted to stop the suspect with his cane but fell to the ground.
“We did our best to try to help him find him, but we unfortunately did not find him. But we did take him some ice, and then the officers showed up,” Popeyes employee Chontell Buckman said.
The suspect ran away and left the busy shopping center on a yellow bike. Witnesses describe the suspect as a man in his 20s with combed back hair.
As for the victim, he was treated and released from the hospital for minor injuries.
“At the end, he didn’t manage to take anything so he took off running hoped on his bike and left,” Michelle Pulido with Watsonville PD said.
The elderly victims family says they hope the community can help identify the suspect.
“It is likely he will target the elderly in the community again if not caught,” the family said in a statement.
