Update: Arrest warrant issued for missing Scottish man

Dive crews searched for days for 55-year-old Kim Gordon before discovering he may have faked his own disappearance. The missing tourist faces 24 charges including the rape, physical, and sexual assault of four people.

After Gordon didn’t appear in court, Monday, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is preparing for what comes next. “If the Scottish authorities do issue that warrant, and it comes over, our case will transform into a wanted person case. We’d bring other agencies in,” said Commander John Thornburg with Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said the U.S. Marshall Service and ICE will become involved once they get notice of a warrant from Scottish authorities. They said they’ve already started to share what they know with the marshall service.

“This might turn into what some people thought it was: a hoax about the swimming. It remains to be seen. We’ll see what comes up,” said Thornburg.

According the Scottish media, Gordon’s charges date all the way back to 1997. Two of his reported victims were minors. This news was unsettling for those who live in the area. “C ertainly it’s nothing that the community looks forward to. Having a known, or at least a suspected, rapist in the area,” said Monterey resident, John Hall.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said they have been following leads on Gordon since the day he went missing. Two possible sightings were reported over the weekend, but the man could still be out there. Officials said returning the man to Scotland is their main priority. “If somebody thinks they see them, they call us. That’s the thing to do. Don’t try to approach him. Don’t try to do anything else. Don’t try to take his picture. Just dial 911. Report it to the local authorities. They will follow up and contact that person, if they can locate them,” said Thornburg.
