Netflix show filming at Toro Cafe
It’s been stop-and-go all day Friday, along Highway 68, but an accident isn’t responsible for this slow down. It’s the Netflix series Ratched, and drivers got to see the action first-hand when passing Toro Place Cafe.
“It’s fun to see those things on TV when you know where they are and places you go,” said nearby resident, Janice Stone.
Production staff said the 1940s era show is based off the novel, and film, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Actress, Sarah Paulson, stars as “Nurse Ratched.” Her character plays a “monster” to patients while working at a mental institution.
Multiple episodes were filmed at the popular roadside stop, and California Highway Patrol said drivers should expect delays until early Friday evening. “W e do ask people to take an alternate route if they’re able to. While the movie for Netflix is shooting, the road will be closed for two to three minutes during that time,” said Officer Joshua Freshwater.
People who live nearby said they are avoiding the area altogether. “It’s bad enough on a normal day. When they do any filming it’s going to be worse, and there’s going to be a lot of angry people,” said nearby resident, Dick Lewis.
Increased traffic isn’t the only result of filming on the peninsula. The Monterey Film Commission said the last show filmed in the area contributed over $3.5 million to the local economy.
People hope Ratched will make just as big of a splash. “They just did that Big Little Lies in Monterey and everybody wanted to see that. Now they will want to see what this is all about,” said Lewis.
The show is set to release on Netflix in 2020. Neighbors said they look forward to watching. “I’m sure somebody in the family will be turning on Netflix to find out what it’s all about,” said Lewis.
