Major gas leak stopped in Monterey

UPDATE: 2/26/2019 7:15 p.m.: Pacific Gas & Electric says a third-party contractor caused the gas leak in Monterey, Tuesday. In an email to KION they write that, before 1 p.m., a two-inch gas line was hit at 80 Monte Vista Drive.

PG&E says the contractor is not-affiliated with their company.

The gas was shut off at around 2:45 p.m., after crews noticed gas in the sewer vents at the Golden Oaks apartment complex. The complex was the only one evacuated in the area.

“We are always concerned of a flammable concentration of the gas that could find an ignition source and that can start a fire,” Monterey Fire Chief Gaudenz Panholzer said on scene.

People in other nearby homes were told to shelter-in-place.

“We were called and told that this area was shut down, and to stay in the house,” said Ken Alameda.

PG&E confirms claims from neighbors that gas remains off in the area. The utility giant said in a phone call that they hope to turn the gas back on Tuesday evening.

Monte Vista remains closed between Mar Vista and Porta Vista. PG&E says just the one gas line was damaged, and they do not have the number of people and businesses affected.
