Rivers near flood concern this morning
This morning we saw a dramatic increase a few local rivers. Leading to a flood advisory for the parts of the Carmel River and Pacheco Creek.
Carol Allaire has lived next to the Carmel River since the 80s. She’s a little higher up, so she wasn’t so concerned with this storm… but the flooding of 1995, keeps her on her toes. “Well from our house, here and straight across, it was like a lake,” says Allaire.
Brian Garcia from the National Weather Service says, “When we get heavy rains like this, you get a lot of water into the watershed very quickly, and those smaller creeks and streams can rise up very fast.”
In the summer-time, locals take their inner tubes and float down the river… but, today it was a different story. And that worries people who have been affected by past storms. “We’re worried about it, it cost me, I don’t know, 10,000 dollars that year to repair the sheetrock and rugs and things in the house. Because, the house actually had 4 inches of water in the bedroom,” says John Aliotti.
Luckily, John didn’t see a repeat this morning. Now, the flood advisories have expired, and the rivers are no longer at near flood stage.
