UPDATE (2/2/19 1:15 P.M.) : The Salinas Police Department tells KION the suspect is a 37 year old Hispanic man. He is still in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. According to police Commander Matt Maldonado they are still waiting to hear from the hospital about if the suspect can be released today, as previously expected.

In a Facebook post early Sunday morning, the Salinas Police Department wrote that dispatchers received a call about a man pointing a gun at customers, at the Safeway on Constitution Boulevard. Five officers responded to the scene.

Maldonado says officers opened fire because the suspect was reaching for a gun.

The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office is now handling the investigation. All five Salinas Police officers were wearing body cameras and, according to Salinas PD, the video is being saved as evidence for the DA Office investigation.

After the suspect is released, he will be booked into the Monterey County Jail. He is facing seven counts of brandishing a replica firearm, resisting arrest, probation violation, and possession of methamphetamine.

This is a developing story.
