9th Annual Whalefest Monterey on the wharf
Whalefest Monterey is back for its 9th year on the wharf.
The annual event aims to teach kids, and adults, all about the ocean and the creatures that live in it. Marine experts from all over the central coast come to share their expertise on different marine life.
Visitors can see and touch a giant whale skeleton or explore the whale’s digestive system from inside a giant inflatable replica.
“I want people to walk away with a greater understanding of how our ocean works. A greater understanding of how to protect it and how to implement and look for ways to implement it,” said organizer, Mary Alice Cerrito-Fettis.
Educating people on how they can protect the ocean is one of Whalefest’s main goals. Many of the booths discuss the harmful effects that trash has on ocean life. They emphasize the importance of recycling here on the peninsula, as trash can easily get swept out to sea.
Whalefest is happening through January 27th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
