“Fix-it tickets” on the way for young bicyclists not wearing helmets
Some adult drivers out there already know what a “fix it ticket” is. They’re usually issued to people driving around with broken headlights among other violations.
Starting next year these tickets will also be issued to young bicyclists who aren’t wearing a helmet.
If they’re younger than 18 they have to have a helmet on while riding a bike otherwise they’ll be issued a ticket.
In fact, lawmakers agreed to extend this to minors riding scooters, skateboards and skates as well.
“Just reminding them to put their helmet on,” says California Highway Patrol Officer Jessica Madueno. “Head injury is something you can’t revert so you really want to prevent that by using that safety helmet.”
If someone under 18 is issued a fix-it ticket it’s correctable, of course. They’ll have to finish up bike safety classes and purchase a helmet which meets safety standards within 120 days in order to have the offense corrected.
