Video shows homeless man dumped and rescued at Salinas recycle facility

Shocking security video shows the moments a homeless man was dumped, found, and rescued at a Salinas trash and recycle facility.

This follows debate over how the man got to Sun Street Transfer Station, after a sweep of the Chinatown homeless encampment, the morning of December 3rd.

Cesar Zuniga, the assistant General Manager of the transfer station tells KION that there is no evidence of someone walking into their business, meaning the man must have arrived on the dump truck.

He says he was buried under a load of trash, but likely broke free when a loader pushed the pile forward, shaking it up. The worker operating that machine noticed the man, who was conscious but unable to speak, and called in help.

“He calls over the radio that they see someone in the waste. They call all the machines to stop
operating,” Zuniga said.

Zuniga tells KION that if the homeless person was not found there, there’s a chance he would have been part of the pile that gets transferred to the dump in Gonzales.

“I think he would have been injured or, possibly, killed,” Zuniga said.

But how did that person get on the truck? The city is sticking with their answer that the man jumped into the truck himself.

“There’s quite a few different versions, and I haven’t seen anything other than the guy climbed in himself and got hauled,” Mayor Joe Gunter said.

But the homeless who live in Chinatown say the city’s version is likely far from the truth. One person tells KION that he heard the man was using the dumpster as a warm bed.

“He fell asleep inside a dumpster. And the dump truck came and picked him up. Thank God he is still alive.”

Gunter says he doesn’t know if findings of the investigation will be released. But moving forward, he adds that the city will make sure people are not inside dumpsters or vehicles when these sweeps happen.
