Election records set in Santa Cruz County

Santa Cruz County saw a record turnout in the November 2018 General Election.

The certified results, released Tuesday by Santa Cruz County Clerk Gail Pellerin, show a record turnout percentage for a midterm election, with 76.31%. The previous record was set back in 1982 with 70.8%. The last midterm election, 2014, registered voter turnout was only 51.99%.

Other midterm voting records set this year include total votes and total vote-by-mail votes. Total voter registration and total vote-by-mail registration numbers were also records, not just for a midterm, but for any election.

Once again, a large percentage of voters chose the vote-by-mail option with 82,868 people doing so, compared to 121,700 total votes cast.
