Christmas tree shortage plus drought proving difficult for Central Coast farmers

Central Coast Christmas tree farmers are having to battle not just the nationwide shortage, but also the state’s drought.

Crest Ranch in particular has trees available but owners say they normally have a backup plan which would allow them to bring in trees from Oregon, however the shortage has put a stop to that plan for the year.

The shortage is traced back to the recession in 2008 with farmers holding back on planting Christmas trees because demand was so low.

KION’s Victor Guzman has the details on how Crest Ranch in particular has tried to keep themselves from being short on Christmas trees.
