‘Operation Turkey’ to feed 1,000 in Santa Cruz County this Thanksgiving

Wednesday’s rain didn’t stop Operation Turkey volunteers from preparing a massive Thanksgiving feast.

The group hopes to feed as many people in need in Santa Cruz County as they can, and it takes a lot of help.

18-year-old, Andy Wise, is the face behind the first, and only, Operation Turkey in California. He was inspired by his uncle, Richard Bagdonas, who founded the non-profit 18 years ago. Wise chose to bring the effort to his home town of Boulder Creek.

The group cooked 53 turkeys on the barbeque on Wednesday, in preparation for Thanksgiving day. “We did accept meal requests for those people who were able to go on our website and give us an address. We’re also gonna go around, drive throughout the county, and look for people who look like they’re in need of a meal,” said Wise.

Wise was able to recruit a group of his closest friends and family, and with their help, he hopes to feed 1,000 people for Thanksgiving. “Food is also a really big part of our family. I’m really glad that were helping other people with that,” said Wise’s girlfriend, Brianna Martin.

Mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, corn, and pumpkin pie will be prepared on Thanksgiving morning from 8am-12pm at the Ben Lomond Fire Department. It is an early call for the crew, but one that Wise said will be well worth it.

“It’s just been great to see how awesome our community is and how willing everyone is to come and help and donate their time to others even on a holiday,” said Wise.
