Soledad plans to open first modern movie theater in Fall 2019
Soledad is soon to get a little bit of Hollywood, as construction for the city’s first modern movie theatre is finally under way.
The multi-million dollar project has been in the works since the city gave it a “stamp of approval” nearly 10 years ago, but residents are just starting to see some action on the future cinema’s site. Some residents have voiced their skepticism about the project, given the drawn out timeline.
Community and Economic Development Director with the city, Brent Slama, said developer, Richard Scagliotti, broke ground on the project about 2 months ago. Construction crews are now starting grading work and installation of underground utilities. “To finally see something happening, people are excited about that, but there are still some people in the community saying that ‘until I see it, I don’t believe it.’ They want to see the walls going up, and hopefully early next year you’ll see that,” said Slama.
Slama said he thinks the theatre will add to the quality of life in Soledad, and that providing local entertainment will not only bring business to the city, but convenience for residents. “Now we don’t have to commute to Salinas and we have something good for our community and our teens. They can stay out of trouble,” said Soledad resident, Veronica Vidalez.
“I mean the community wants this. This is the biggest priority for city council. The economic development, more stores, more retail opportunities, not having to go to Salinas for everything, or other places. To have that type of facility here really shows that we are growing,” said Slama.
Slama said the theatre isn’t the only development residents will have to look forward to. He told us, Scagliotti plans to add more retail shops and restaurants in the future.
Developers plan to start selling tickets, candy, and popcorn in Fall 2019.
