New wildfires in Greece as Europe braces for more heat

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Two new fires have broke out near Greece’s capital of Athens following a round-the-clock effort to halt a blaze in the outskirts of the city. Elsewhere in southern Europe, authorities on Wednesday took stock of the damage caused during the latest severe heat wave and prepared for the return of scorching temperatures. French President Emmanuel Macron visited the country’s hardest-hit region of Gironde, in the southwest, and met with firefighters who have been battling the flames for a week. The head of the World Meteorological Organization says more frequent and more extreme heat waves are an inevitable consequence of climate change. He said he hopes this summer “will be a wake-up call for governments.”
