Armed robber makes up Salinas carjacking story

An armed robber led police on a chase and later tried to convince them that he was a victim of a carjacking.

22-year-old Jovany Aguirre allegedly robbed the Quik Stop located in the 300 block of Williams Road.

The robbery happened around 10 p.m. Sunday.

After leaving the Quik Stop, Salinas police said Aguirre didn’t stop there. He reportedly robbed a second victim in the parking lot.

The victim gave SPD a vehicle description of Aguirre’s car and the direction he drove in.

“The suspect vehicle refused to stop and a vehicle pursuit was initiated,” said SPD.

The car was found abandoned at Sanborn Road and Freedom Pkwy.

Officers canvassed the area and received a call about a carjacking near Baja Circle. Once officers arrived they located the alleged victim (Aguirre) of the carjacking and determined that his story didn’t add up.

Witnesses and victims later identified Aguirre as the robbery suspect. He was arrested and charged with two counts of armed robbery and evading an officer.

Aguirre was booked into Monterey County Jail.
