DMV warns Californians of unofficial websites charging fees
Many Californians looking to beat the long lines at the DMV are utilizing online options. Unfortunately, deceptive sites are charging customers extra fees. These sites are fooling customers, disguised as the official Department of Motor Vehicles.
DMV customer, Brannon Streuer, waited in line at the Salinas location, Wednesday. After showing him both sites, one the official DMV site, and one the unofficial, he admitted it was a tough call. “I would probably use the first one, but that one looks very professional too,” said Streuer.
After speaking with other customers, it became clear how easily anyone could make this mistake. “Especially because it says “dot org.” In order to avoid the lines at the dmv, I would definitely go on that website. I would trust it,” said another customer, when viewing the unofficial site.
The California DMV said they have heard from customers, upset after being fooled by an alternate site. The DMV said the sites are taking customer’s money in exchange for services like electronic drivers license and ID card applications. The DMV said there should be no fees associated with license applications and that customers should see this as a red flag.
“I would have to do a lot of research to do anything online. is what it sounds like right now,” said Streuer.
DMV officials said they are looking to get the word out by warning customers of the foolery.
