DUI driver arrested in fatal ATV crash in Aptos

An Australian woman was killed after an ATV crash outside Aptos Saturday night.

The fatal accident happened around 11:45 p.m. off Redwood Heights Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, 29-year-old Nicholas Zier of Portola Valley was driving an ATV under the influence with two passengers on a private road when he lost control.

The ATV overturned and everyone was thrown out and injured. Zier and passengers were not wearing seatbelts.

Zier and another 29-year-old man found the other passenger, a woman in her mid-20’s, unresponsive.

The two performed CPR until friends came to drive them to the house on the property.

CHP, Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Deputies, AMR and Aptos Fire met the group at the house.

They continued to give first aid and CPR, but the woman died at the scene.

Zier was arrested for Felony DUI after being treated for minor injuries.

He is booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail.
