E-scooter launch causes concern for Santa Cruz city leaders

The city of Santa Cruz got a surprise Thursday morning.

Bird, a motorized scooter company, launched a new program there without going through the city.

The scooters are available for rent throughout Santa Cruz using the company’s app.

Because the company did not get permits and go through the proper channels, the city sent Bird a cease-and-desist letter when they found out what happened.

Bird responded by saying they’re willing to work with the city, but this comes after the program launch.

If the scooter company and the city of Santa Cruz do not come to an agreement, the scooters will be impounded and the company will be responsible for the costs.
