Man identified in Monterey shots fired incident

UPDATE (9/12/18): Monterey officials are releasing the identity of the man involved in this incident.

60-year-old Daniel Piggott of Monterey was booked into the Monterey County Jail for charges which included manufacturing an assault weapon, possession of an assault weapon, possession of high capacity magazines, negligent discharge of a firearm and discharge of a firearm in a school zone.

The investigation stemming from the incident on 9/7/18 revealed that Piggott was responsible for the original shots fired call. Evidence recovered at the scene indicated that Piggott had fired multiple rounds, several of which struck a wall on a patio that was adjacent to his apartment.

UPDATE (09/07/18 10 p.m.): A man with a gun put a Monterey school nearby on lockdown on Friday.

Police got calls of shots being fired at the Del Monte Village apartment complex at around 2:30 p.m. The apartments are located only a block away from Bay View Academy off of Casa Verde Way, which police and school administrators put into lockdown.

Don Williams, who lives at Del Monte Village, was minding his own business when he heard six or seven shots go off.

“Sure, it was so loud. I don’t know if it was a .45 or a 9mm. I couldn’t tell you what size, just right across from my front door,” he said.

Police say the gun was fired by a man Williams says is the manager of the apartment complex. Officers found the shooter inside his room and used a hostage negotiator to get him out.

“The subject after about 45 minutes came out and gave up. We were able to take him into custody,” said Monterey Police Chief Dave Hober. “We’re still investigating exactly what was going on.”

Police believe he was shooting his gun into the air. No one was injured. Inside his apartment, police found several firearms.

The shooter is being given a mental health evaluation. Police say this case will be sent to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office to see if any charges will be filed.

“That’s never happened and I’ve lived here 5+ years, so it’s a first for me,” said Meghan Dooley, another resident of the apartment complex.

Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to call the Monterey Police Department at 831-646-3831, or to remain anonymous call 831-646-3840.

EARLIER UPDATE: The shelter in place has been lifted, and officers are still investigating.

The Monterey Police Chief says officers responded to reports of a shooting near Bayview school.

The school was placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure.

Officers say a man possibly shot a gun into the air and surrendered after 45 minutes.
