Cracks forming on new Highway 1 stretch in Mud Creek

Cracks have formed along the new stretch of Highway 1 in Mud Creek south of Big Sur a little over a month after the road reopened to traffic.

Caltrans tells KION they are aware of the new cracks on the road, but they also say it is nothing to worry about.

Some of the cracks are found right where the new road begins in Mud Creek, all of them on the southbound lane of Highway 1.

The cracks there are not wide, but they do extend more than just a few inches.

Caltrans says this type of damage is nothing they did not expect. In fact, they say it is completely natural to see cracks form as Mud Creek’s soil continues to settle.

Drivers traveling through Mud Creek along Highway 1 should not worry about the road being dangerous or unstable, according to a Caltrans spokesperson.

There are no scheduled repairs to be done on the cracks for now, but Caltrans will continue to monitor the condition of the road.
