Group pushes to repeal statewide gas tax
The campaign to repeal a statewide gas tax made its way to Seaside, Saturday morning.
California gas prices are currently among the highest in the county. The state placed second, behind Hawaii.
Vote Yes On Prop 6, a group that is pushing for the repeal of the 2017 Gas Tax Law, said people are paying $0.95 per gallon in taxes.
The money is for state-wide transportation improvement projects. People in Seaside Saturday, said it is too much.
“I don’t drive out of town too often. I only go once a week, and that’s it. I can’t afford to go anymore times,” said Monterey resident, Loretta Davi.
Davi added that she doesn’t see where the money is going, and is unimpressed with road conditions.
Some Republicans predict that the gas tax hike will cost California families an additional $700, on average, in fuel, each year.
State Assembly candidate, Neil Kitchens, who attended the meeting on Saturday, said California needs to work to lower the cost of living for residents.
“We’re already the highest tax state, period. Now, we have the highest gas tax. Which is killing jobs. It’s killing working families. It’s hurting the poor the most. People are starting to have to choose between buying groceries and putting gas in their car,” said Kitchens.
Those against Prop 6 said it would jeopardize thousands of transportation projects around the state and eliminate thousands of jobs.
California residents will have the opportunity to vote upon Prop 6 this November.
