CHP: DUI driver likely caused deadly motorcycle crash near Gilroy

UPDATE: 8/6/2018 9:40 a.m. There was a fatal collision involving an SUV and a motorcycle, west of Gilroy, Friday night.

The California Highway Patrol said the accident happened shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Watsonville Road, south of Pharmer Road. This is less than a mile north of Highway 152.

According to CHP, the driver of a 1999 Dodge Durango went into the northbound lane and struck a motorcycle driven by 24-year-old Dillon Oliver of San Jose. Oliver and his passenger were ejected from the motorcycle. Oliver died from his injuries.

CHP said the driver of the Durango attempted to drive away but his car broke down at the intersection of Watsonville Road and 152.

Alcohol and drugs are believed to have played a factor.
