Injuries reported in riot at Soledad Correctional Facility

UPDATE 8/5/18 7:20 p.m. —
A riot broke out at the Correction Training Facility in Soledad Sunday morning.

A spokesperson for the prison told KION the riot occurred around 10:45 a.m. involving about 100 inmates.

No inmates escaped during the incident.

At least two inmates were taken to the hospital for treatment, but no staff or officers were injured. The condition of the injured inmates is unknown.

The riot happened in the yard for Facility C. Officials are still investigating what caused the incident.

Prison staff had the affected inmates on lockdown. They were planning to interview a few of them to find out just exactly what happened.

The lockdown forces all inmates back to their cells where correctional officers conduct searches for their investigation.

The Correction Training Facility has about 800 officers and 600 regular staff for 5,300 inmates.

The prison spokesperson said they train for these types of riots every year.

This is not the first time a riot has happened. Last July, five inmates were taken to the hospital after a riot at the neighboring Salinas Valley State Prison.

That day, two inmates began fighting and 20 others joined in. Staff used chemical agents to disperse the crowd.

But information is still limited for Sunday’s incident.
