Probation search leads Monterey PD to 112 guns and several hand grenades
UPDATE: 8/2/2018 4:52 p.m. A probation search led Monterey police officers to more than 100 guns and several hand grenades inside a Monterey home.
Officers were conducting a search of 50-year-old Paula Roman’s home in the 1200 block of Eighth Street on August 1.
Once inside, officers found ammunition, narcotics, drug paraphernalia, and a destructive device similar to a hand grenade.
Officers evacuated the house and contacted the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad.
“Monterey County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad deputies determined the hand grenade was a practice device without explosive capabilities. While the device did not have explosive capabilities, it was illegal to possess,” said Lt. Ethan Andrews.
After the initial probation search, (which only included part of the home), MPD served a search warrant for the entire home. Officers found 112 guns including two illegal assault rifles, seven more practice hand grenades, an improvised explosive, and materials for making explosive devices.
The bomb squad came back to the scene and did three more detonations.
Roman was arrested for being a felon in possession of ammunition, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and probation violation. Roman was booked into the Monterey County Jail with bail set at $10,000.
60-year-old John Panetta was arrested for possession of destructive device, possession of destructive device materials, possession of an assault weapon, and maintaining a drug house. His bail was set at $50,000.
